Does Oppo know any bof sports cars besides the Corvette and the Triumph TRs? If you do know, please mention the type of frame (i.e platform frame, perimeter frame, x-frame).

Just curious and can't find any in google searches. The norm is monocoques or unibodies with subrames, but I like the good old fashioned way.

IF there's 1 thing top gear teach me, most of the TVRs is a Body-on-frame.

Not as a sports car, but it is certainly bof. I think the Lotus Elan counts though.

Yeah. They used the Chimaera frame to build the Hammerhead i-eagle thurst.

Where does body on frame end and a spaceframe begin?

If all the body panels can be removed entirely from the frame I imagine.

I believe the Kaiser-Darrin used the Henry J's chassis, and so was BOF.

Only ones I can think of besides those are the MGA and quite a few TVRs.

Corvette is pretty close to traditional bof, only exception is that the a and b pillar is structural.

What is the difference? I'm a no mechanic oppo. I'd venture to guess the other manufacturing options were used over body on frame in favor of modern benefits.

In body on frame cars, the body is completely removable from chasis for ease of collision or rust repair. Perimeter frames offer good side impact collision protection, but will flex unless they are braced with huge crossmembers. X-frames offer good rigidity and relatively good handling, but poor safety. Full tubular frames offer the best rigidity and safety. Bof is rarely used in modern cars due to cost and weight, but are used for heavy duty vehicles like trucks while some exotics use full tubular construction.

In monocoque cars, the entire body is composed of structural members made from folds in the sheet metal of the panels. The entire body is structural, so a rusted roof or floorpan could cripple the car. It is used to save weight and it is easy to make rigid.

In unibody cars, the front suspension and rear suspension are attached to seperate subframes, which are bolted onto a monocoque passenger compartment. This allows a car to have structural window pillars for safety and keep manufacturing easy and cheap. Disadvantages of monocoques and unibodies are worse ride quality and poor durability.

I prefer body on frame vehicles because I'd rather drive something that will still be around in 40 years.

There's loads :)

Triumph Spitfire

Triumph GT6

Triumph TR2, 3, 4, 5 and 6

Reliant Scimitar (fibreglass body on that one as well)

Daimler SP250

Austin Healeys

Jaguar XK120/150

Lotus Elan

Lotus Elite

Lotus Europa

Mercedes 190SL

Opel GT

That's a pretty comprehensive list, but I think the Opel GT is a steel unibody, not a body on frame.

I don't think so. It has front and rear subframes with a carbon fibre tub. It sounds too much like a unibody to me.

Other than I guess the tub as a floor pan and firewall, all the body panels can be removed, as in that picture. Isnt that kinda the modern equivalent?

Drat, I was unsure about that one. I was wondering whether it was fibreglass body on a steel backbone...

Sounds fair haha.

My point was just that, as opposed to for example the Aventador:

Kinja'd!!!

The chassis has nothing that ends up as an external bit of bodywork, much like the old body-on-framers.

This has the added benefit of a droptop version with very little loss in rigidity :)
